Young Match Officials
Inspiring the next generation of referees
Hampshire RFU and HRR are committed to supporting the growth and development of Young Match Officials (YMOs) across our clubs, schools, and representative rugby. Refereeing is a fantastic way for young people to stay involved in rugby, build confidence, and develop leadership skills — whether they continue as players, referees, or coaches in the future.
Why Become a Young Match Official?
Becoming a YMO offers a wide range of benefits:
- Stay Involved in Rugby – Whether you play or not, refereeing keeps you active and part of the game.
- Develop Confidence and Leadership – Learn to make decisions under pressure, manage players, and communicate clearly.
- Gain Transferable Skills – Teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills that benefit school, work, and everyday life.
- Support Your Club and Community – Help keep the game going for younger age groups and contribute to the rugby family.
- Pathways for Progression – Opportunities to officiate at festivals, tournaments, and even representative rugby as experience grows.
