Coaching in Hampshire
At Hampshire RFU, we believe coaching is at the heart of developing rugby at every level. Our goal is to support and grow our incredible coaching workforce, ensuring all players have the opportunity to fulfil their full potential.
Requirements for Coaching Rugby
To coach rugby in Hampshire, you’ll need the following:
- A valid RFU coaching qualification suitable for your role – ERCA is expected for lead coaches of U9 and above.
- An up-to-date DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service).
- Headcase Concussion Awareness: A free, 30-minute eLearning course for anyone aged 14 and up.
- Tackle Safe: eLearning course focusing on the development of high quality coaching of tackle skills.
- Safeguarding Courses: Introduction to safeguarding and Play It Safe training for anyone aged 16 and over who works with children or vulnerable adults.

How We Support Coaches
Hampshire RFU is committed to helping coaches develop their skills and confidence:
- Club Coaching Coordinators (CCC) network: Each club has a designated CCC who is responsible for leading on coach recruitment and development.
- Access to CPD Opportunities: Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions delivered throughout the season.
- Annual Coaching Conference: A chance to learn from top-level speakers, network, and gain fresh ideas for your sessions.
The RFU provides a range of courses designed to help you develop as a coach
- England Rugby Coaching Award (ERCA): A key qualification for coaches working in youth rugby and above.
- England Rugby Advanced Coaching Award (ERACA): For experienced coaches looking to deepen their knowledge.
- Principles of Lineout (POL): This course is designed to help coaches, match officials and volunteers explore recent developments in lineout coaching.
- Principles of Scrummaging (POS): This course is designed to help coaches, match officials and volunteers explore recent developments in scrum coaching.
- Neurodiversity in rugby: Neurodiversity resources, produced in collaboration with Neurodiverse Sport, aim to deepen coaches understanding neurodiversity in rugby and build practical coaching skills. To access, click here
